How does one become a union representative?

Not as a person to start the union at your company, but one who actually works for the union. I’m wondering specifically about becoming a union rep for the teacher’s union, but any information would be greatly appreciated.
Any union can have about 25 to 50 % of outsiders as office bearers of the union ,depending upon the state in which the union is registered.
If you want to represent teachers, you have to be thourough with their problems and then be able to get them redressed at appropriate forums !!
